Highly individual three piece band who caused quite a stir in the Triangle area on the north coast of Northern Ireland in the early 1980’s. The band were Kieran McAleese, Adrian Edwards and Chris Doherty. As well as appealing to local music lovers who were ready to accept something different, Boomchenka also had a strong visual appeal, playing at venues such as Spuds in Portstewart.
When the band split in the mid 1980’s, two former members of the band, Kieran McAleese (Vocals & Guitar) and Adrian Edwards (Keyboards & Rhythms), working under the name Gasket River, secured a record contract with English Independent label Silicon Records, after relocating to Eastbourne from their home base at Portstewart. Gasket River released a ten track cassette album on Silicon Records in 1985, entitled The Seam Creaks. Chris Doherty from the band had been tragically blinded by terrorists in a shooting incident in the 1970’s. Despite his visual impairment, Chris went onto achieve success in athletics and bowls as well as receiving top marks in secretarial examinations at Coleraine Technical College.
