DUGGIE BRIGGS BAND

A Belfast pubrock band formed at school by Dirty Mack and Cul-E-Backey which was soon enhanced by the superior musicianship of Derek Claptout, Leonard Skeyboard and AB Normal.

Hauled kicking and screaming from obscurity by Cliff Moore of IT Records to Hydepark Studios! With only Maltesers and Bushmills for sustenance (ah, the rock ‘n roll lifestyle!), The band recorded 2 singles for the indie label which took on a life of their own, that continues to this day!

Their first release was a PuNk novelty single “Punk Rockin Granny” issued in the golden year of PuNk, 1977 (see below). Dirty Mack recalls -“Our efforts were a little “tongue in cheek” but we always took the music seriously and hoped anyone who heard it would, like us, have a smile on their face and a bloody good time!Realistically we never expected to be accepted by the punk fraternity while we insisted upon wearing Led Zeppelin tee shirts and lumberjack shirts!”

A follow up 4 track EP was released in 1978 on the same label before the band disappeared without trace. Both singles are now highly collectable. The track 24 Hours late, from their second single was featured by John Peel on his BBC Radio 1 show of 2nd January 1979. In the show John had a wordless tribute to the music that came out of N. Ireland in 1978, where he played back to back tracks by Stiff Little Fingers, The Undertones, RUDI, The Outcasts, Protex, Xdreamysts, No Sweat, Blue Steam & of course, The Duggie Briggs Band.

Derek Claptout is the only member still actively involved in music, through a well deserved reputation as the “go to guy” for maintenance and repair of sound equipment and guitars, under the guise of amprepairsni.
