ELECTRO-MOTIVE FORCE

Eletro-Motive Force formed in the winter of 1980. They had previously gone by the name White Noise but shortly after recording 4 demo tracks in November 1980 in Cuecomber Studios (Comber, Co Down) Togsy left the band to be replaced by Jim Millar on bass. With a new line up it was decided that a new name was also called for and the band settled on Eletro-Motive Force.

The new line was Jim Roche – vocals, Nigel Gilroy – drums, Paul Harrison – guitar, Victor Anderson - lead guitar & Jim  Mellar – bass. With the guidance and financial assistance from their manager James Tweedie the band went to release a self titled 4 track 7” on their own Surge Records label in 1982. The tracks Conscious, Spidermen, Wanted and Mental Cases make up this excellent single. With a pressing run of only 500, copies are quite hard to obtain. Picture sleeves are also hard to come by as a couple of hundred of these were stolen from a band member’s car shortly after the singles release. The record has become a much sought after N. Ireland punk artefact.
