The Hitlers were
a covers band from Derry that existed between early 1982 and
1984. They featured Paddy Doherty vocals, Paul McCartney guitar,
Michawl Campbell bass and Mickey Griffiths on drums. Mickey
had played in a variety of local bands including the Idol Threats
and Dick Tracy and the Green Disaster. Paddy had fronted the
Shameless Hussies and Paul was a member of Graffiti before forming
Bam Bam And The Calling. The band played a varied set of covers,
from the Birthday Party and the Cramps to The Ramones and Iggy
Pop. Paddy Doherty reveals the band’s philosophy “We
were a band that took the genre of showband (covers band) to
the next level. We led a fast and varied existence. We weren't
paid much money and as I recall most payments were made in the
form of the liquid variety, but we had a loyal following and
because of the nature of the band and our followers, we had
to play under a variety of different names in order to even
get a gig but the one which we always came back to was The Hitlers”.
