KC AND THE MOONSHINE BAND

KC & the Moonshine band (later renamed Stagnant Excretia) were formed in 1984 by Mike Gale and David ‘Smout’ Martin when their Larne based band the Alienated folded. The band were Smout on guitar, Mike on drums, KC vocals (Kenneth Catterson) & Anne on bass. Their track “Which Side” appeared on the 1985 Mortarhate compilation LP entitled “We Won't Be Your Fucking Poor”. Another notable live track was “77 Eat Shit”, the bands piss take of early commercialised PuNk.

Initial rehearsals took place in Dubarry’s pub convenient to the Albert Clock and a debut gig in Rathcoole quickly followed. The gig had been arranged by Roy Wallace (Roy of Wardance and later Toxic Waste). Mike Gale remembers “Yes, we played along side both Conflict and Toxic Waste at the infamous Manhattan Club and we also played with Disorder. We toured England with Dirt and Toxic Waste in March 1985 with Roy from Toxic Waste playing bass for us as Ann our bassist was only 15 and still at school!” (above image taken on this tour). My best memories though are of touring with the amazing Toxic Waste, playing the Bunker in Sunderland and Newcastle with Phantoms Of The Underground”.

Smout went on to form Repulse who released several records in the 1990's. Smout is still recording today, under the name Denzil, while Pete Magill records under the name Peng Weng!
