NOBODY'S BUSINESS

Hailing from West Belfast, Nobody’s Business were Dermo Donnelly Drums, Tucker Young Lead Guitar & Vocals and Brendan McKeown (Brendy) Bass Guitar & Vocals.

Formed in 1978, they played their debut gig supporting The Lids in Lurgan. Brendy “We played during their break a few times in a bar in Lurgan. They were more of a rock band at the time, who performed Rolling Stones numbers etc”. A trip to Joe Cavanagh’s in Smithfield Market had secured the band their gear and an intense period of practice had ensued. Local gigs at Lake Glen Hotel followed and they took the bull by the horns and decided to ask Rab McCullough (Baraka) if they could play during their break in the Clubhouse on the Glen Road, which he happily agreed to and the band did that on a regular basis. Rab was instrumental in helping other young punk bands, such as the Ex - Producers get some of their early gigs too and was always generous with his time, his advice and his equipment.

They played several high profile gigs, including a Sunday night Rock Against Repression gig at the Green Briar in June 1979, where London bands Oxy & The Morons from Hackney and Charge played alongside local bands such as Voltage. Rock Against Repression was held over two nights, the first one taking place at The Shamrock Club in the Ardoyne. Brendy again “We didn’t do much after the Rock Against Repression gigs but it was an experience and one that I cherish”.

Today, Brendan is catering manager at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.
