NO SMOKIN'

No Smokin' were a studio only project assembled by Davy Smith on the back of the success of The Undertones "Teenage Kicks” EP, which Smith had produced at his own Wizard Studios in Belfast 1978. Wizard was the go to studio for lots of the bands recording tracks for Terri Hooley’s Good Vibrations Record label, including the aforementioned Undertones, The Androids, Protex, The Outcasts to name just a few. The studio band concept started in 1978 and ended in 1979 with the release of their only recorded output, a 7-inch single Miles Away c/w Turn For The Good. The single was released on Davy’s Okay Doke Records (OD.1). Davy would go on to issue a second 45 on the label in 1979 by Larne Rock combo Street, entitled Sweet Chelsay. No Smokin’s line up was Davy Smyth on vocals, his wife Valerie Smyth (bass), and session musicians Nicky Scott (guitar), Victor Black (keyboards), Mike McMillan (bass) and Jeff Kirk (drums). The B side saw Davy and his wife Valerie play all the instruments and take care of vocal duties.

Davy's musical roots can be traced back to Larne Showband Pasado who evolved into Candy. After Davy had left Candy, they started playing punk gigs under the name Pretty Boy Floyd & The Gems as well as continuing to gig as Candy. Davy was singer in both bands until leaving Candy and forming Smicker in of June 1976. Davy also ran a home studio based in Castlereagh for a couple of years, before setting up Wizard Studios in Belfast city centre. The Miles Away track, recorded by No Smokin’ in 1979 dates back to these 1976 Smicker recording sessions and rehearsals in Castlereagh. ‘Miles Away’ was originally a slow ballad until Tom Teegan suggested upping the tempo. Davy Shannon played bass on this track though he's not credited on the sleeve. Davy Shannon worked at Wizard studios and was engineer on the Undertones "Teenage Kicks" EP.
