No Sweat was a three piece band formed in 1978
by Ballymoney born Clive Culbertson. The band also featured
Clive’s brother Adrian on guitar and Paddy Scanlon on
drums, with Clive on bass and vocal duties. Clive, an accomplished
musician, had previously played in a succession of Irish showbands
before moving to London in 1971 and forming a band called Maybe.
However, when this band folded in 1975, Clive returned to Northern
Ireland where he worked with a pop / rock band called Fantasy.
They played the local pub and club circuit up until late 1977
when Clive joined local Showband Candy. Interesting, Candy’s
guitarist at the time, Dennis Forbes, would later record with
No Sweat on their one and only single, although be never joined
the band. Denis was also guitarist with Pretty Boy Floyd And
The Gems. Candy’s drummer, Rickey Bleakley would also
feature in Clive’s next band, The Sweat!
No Sweat were essentially formed to have some
fun on the local circuit playing original punk tunes with the
odd cover version thrown in to stretch out their live set. They
built up a sizeable local following in the late 70's, playing
at venues all over the country. Their brand of lively power-pop
appealing to a much wider audience than that of the numerous
Punk bands vying for attention at the same time. No Sweat signed
to Rip-Off Records later in 1978, with whom they released the
excellent ‘Start All Over Again” c/w ‘You
Should Be So Lucky’ single. The band also appeared on
the Rip off Records compilation album and single “Belfast
Rock”. However, despite good press reviews and a lot of
air play, the single failed to trouble the charts and the band
subsequently fizzled out.
Clive went on to record solo material for Rip
Off Records in 1979 and form The Sweat in 1980. Details of these
projects are detailed elsewhere on this web site.
In 2007
Japanese label 1977 Records brought out a vinyl album and CD
containing all of the Sweat’s recorded material which
included the No Sweat two track single released on Rip Off Records
as part of the bonus material. It also featured the previously
unreleased No Sweat track “Let Your Love Shine On”.
