PHOBIA

Phobia were a punk band formed in Donaghadee in the early 1980's. Initial practice sessions took place in Graeme’s attic, before relocating to the local Scout hall. Despite being bricked by skinheads on one occasion there, they were undeterred and soon performed their debut gig at the Imperial Hotel in Donaghadee. The line up on the night was, Stuart (Faggy) McFadden on bass guitar, Graeme (Grot) Hallsall on lead guitar and vocals, Shane McNamara on vocals and Ivor on the drum stool. David (Charlie Harper) played guitar on a number of songs.

Encouraged by how well this gig was received a number of gigs quickly followed at Digbys in Newtownards plus return visits to the Imperial Hotel. The band's live set now included some original songs such as 'Purple Casino', 'Private Eye' and 'Jim Is A Homosexual' along with covers of bands such as The Clash, The Ramones and a cover of Warhead by the UK Subs. However, line up changes ensued that saw Lenny Bennett take over on drums, Derrick McVeigh on bass and Ken Donaldson on rhythm guitar. Graeme being the only surviving member from the original incarnation of the band.

Phobia played support to Suburban Gorillas at St Marks Church Hall in Newtownards. They also supported Stalag 17 and Pure Mania at the legendary Pound in Belfast. At least one live recording was made of the band, but sadly this tape hasn’t survived. The band parted company after these series of gigs and went their separate ways. A short but sweet existence.
