POSITIVE ACTION

West Belfast post PuNk combo Positive Action were Declan McCavana, vocals. Damien (Dee) Magee - guitar, Pete Hesketh - drums and Noel Burke - bass. Formed in 1978, their influences were sighted as the Gang of Four, Siouxsie & the Banshees, white reggae and The Cure. The band’s logo was an arrow combined with a plus symbol.

Using Beechmount Leisure Centre as a rehearsal base, the band managed to chalk up over 30 gigs, supporting the likes of Shock Treatment at venues such as the Pound and the Dunbar Arms. They later shortened their name to PA and even had a gig review in the NME which said that “Declan had a ‘good voice’ but ‘can’t sing’. They even played the Harp Bar when it was past it’s glory days. A member of the Outcasts threw a bottle or glass at them because they didn’t like them (too post punk). On the night in question, they were playing with the Serious Mistakes, who, by all accounts, were treated even worse!

There are rumours that an unreleased demo from 1980 exists! The band split in 1981 when Declan left Belfast for good. Damien and Noel later formed St Vitus Dance together and were on the legendary Liverpool label Probe Plus. Declan later met Matt Campbell at Trinity and started a rhythm & blues band called 8vis (pronounced eight of us). They supported The Blades at the Trinity Ball.

Damien Magee, guitarist, is now producer of Good Morning Ulster on BBC NI original bass player Noel Burke, replaced Ian McCulloch as lead singer with Echo & The Bunnymen on the 1990 Reverberation album after answering an ad in NME.

On 29th March 2022 Spit Records released Shellshock Rockers Vol. 3, a compilation CD of previously unreleased tracks, all salvaged from old cassette tapes. This compilation included Positive Action track ‘Four People’, recorded in 1980.
