THE PEASANTS

Several members of The Peasants had been in schoolboy group The Incredibly Boring Band, who had also included in their ranks future members of Protex. When The Incredibly Boring Band eventually split up, Mike Edgar - (drums) and Malachy Muinzer - (bass) went on to form a Beatles inspired Powerpop / Beat combo called The Peasants.  The line-up was completed by Brendan Popplestone -(guitar/vocals) and Paul Nesbitt -(guitar). Paul was later replaced by Garth Craig on guitar. Paul's father, who taught at Methody College, had a more successful recording career when he went on to become Paul Hofner of Gretschen Hofner fame! Mike Edgar went on to to be the drummer for Cruella De Ville playing along side Malchy's brother & sister (Colm & Philomena) & is now "Head of Entertainment and Events" for BBC Northern Ireland.

The Peasants played the usual school discos (Methody, Inst. etc.) and they even got as far as making a record.  A four track EP was recorded at Homestead Studios in Ahoghill produced by Mud Wallace who had previously worked with a host of local PuNk and New Wave bands such Rudi, The Outcasts and Shock Treatment. The tracks on the EP were “Here She Comes”, “I Care For You”, “When I Close My Eyes” and “I Can Help”. The record was released in October 1981 on Wallace's own Homestead label and came in a picture sleeve depicting ‘a Tibetan woman riding a pig’! Apparently there was an initial pressing of 500 copies which was followed by a second pressing of 500. Despite the second pressing, the single is still virtually impossible to find and if you are fortunate enough to locate a copy, be prepared to pay a tidy sum for it!

The Peasants biggest claim to fame was when a friend managed to get them gigs in Nottingham and Leicester supporting The Jam and Q Tips at university balls before they eventually splitting up in the early 1980s. Mike went on to drum with Cruella De Ville.
