Three piece, formed in late 70's Annaghmore, Co. Armagh, The Piles were Kid Itch on guitar (Eugene Canavan), Hemex Haemorrhoid on guitar and vocals (Liam Devlin) and P. Enis on drums (Joe Devlin). They booked one gig, at St Patricks Hall in Armagh and in true alternative fashion, failed to show, but the legend lives on through the only real talent in the band (Kid Itch) who continues The Piles story in a series of fantasy adventures called 'The Piles Files' (see above image).

The band did make one demo tape and duly left a copy in with Terri Hooley at his Good Vibrations Shop in Belfast, for consideration. Liam takes up the story "When we were trying to retrieve our (one and only) demo tape back from Good Vibes, Terri told us that his wife was 6 months pregnant and that the foetus had more talent than us!  This was undoubtably true but undeterred, we sent the biggest fella we knew (with a snorkel jacket) to demand the tape back and sent it on for further rejection by Island Records and Sony".

Somehow, DIY Records in Penarth, Wales picked up on it and included several tracks on a compilation cassette release in 1980. So, The Piles never actually played a live gig and their recorded output was captured on a C60 tape, via a family stereo system. However, their cassette demos were, thanks to Dean Poole’s DIY Records in Penarth released in September 1980 on DIY Records "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" triple cassette package.

The Piles were of course on the Ugly album and the tracks used included “Jack The Ripper” and “Fart of the Year” But the story doesn’t end there! DIY Records folded in January 1981 and Dean then launched Sexy Records.  He included Jack the Ripper on "Erk - the Album" in 1981 and later both of the above tracks again were included on ‘A Bagful of Angst Volume 2 - An Alternative Way Out’. Dean also put out his own Fanzine called ‘Nude Systems’. The Piles main Demo tape was entitled:  "The Very Best of The Piles" and contained other tracks such as ‘Friends of Mine’, “Jeremy Thorpe (Not a Love Song)’ and ‘Diarrhoea Crisis’.
