THE SUSPECTS

Short lived Bushmills band that were formed in 1979 and split the following year. The band were Arnold Bailey - Lead Guitar, Alan Mc Laughlin - Rhythm Guitar, Paul Bailey - Bass Guitar, John Scott - Drums and Shephen Palmer - Vocals. Stephen was later replaced by Mervyn Shields. Their set included a clutch of Ramones covers and a sprinkling of original compositions too.

They played mainly around the triangle area, on the north coast, however, they did make one memorable appearance at the Harp bar in Belfast, as vocalist Mervyn recalls

"Yeah, we played the Harp Bar in March 1980. We were supporting the Spare Mentals from Coleraine and hired a Budget Rent a Van for the day. When we arrived at the Harp the security guy told us to park in the alley next to the club. We noticed another hire van parked there with Tyrone plates. When we got inside there was a scruffy bunch of punk urchins sound-checking. Seemed they had double-booked that night and had The Inflatable Dolls from Dungannon and PVC from Cookstown down to play. Feeling miffed, we informed the promoter we would head back to Coleraine and could he unlock the key to the gate where the van was parked. No chance! The barman with the key had gone home for his tea! So they got 4 bands for the price of 2 that night at the Harp, and what an evening".
