Tie The Boy were a four-piece, formed in 1982 in Derry by Kevin Williams (vocals), Peter Cunnah (guitar), Gerry Diver (bass), Tim Hegarty (drums).

The band name came from an old tramp in Derry, who the locals called Tie The Boy as he used to have his clothes tied up around his cuffs and around his boots. He used to perform tricks for the local kids. People in Derry would have said, if you were wearing something unusual or were scruffy, “You’re running around like Tie The Boy”.

They self released a single in 1986 ‘Limbo’ c/w ‘Voyeur Love’ on Money Records which received airplay on BBC Radio 1. The band pressed up 1,200 copies. They also recorded two sessions for Dave Fanning in the 80s. The first, recorded in late 1986 featured the tracks ‘More Than Love’, ‘Blame It On Me’, ‘ Kerry Babies’ & ‘My Pleasure’. Their 1988 session featured the tracks ‘Voyeur Love’, ‘Gorgeous Creature’, ‘Mr Universe’. The band also recorded a four track session for the Janice Long Show Evening show on BBC Radio 1.

Guitarist Peter Cunnah went on to significant success with D:REAM and ‘Things Can Only Get Better’and is also a renowned producer.

The four original members of Tie The Boy played a benefit reunion show in Derry on Easter Monday 1st April 2024 after a 37 year gap.
